Welcome to our world. We don’t always dress alike, but we DO create, produce, write, and adapt in new realities (like life in the U.S. right now)!
We create! At Swamphatched Butterfly Productions, we believe in the value of storytelling through film and theatre. Which is why we produce a wide variety of projects.
Whether it be a one-woman piece of theatre, a package of health systems training videos, or a narrative film: SHB Productions will be there to help you hatch your idea.

Denise’s new stand-up show premieres March 12-14, 2020 at IX Art Park! Cleaning at night is….different, isn’t it? From basement discoveries and deviant midnight meditations on minimalism to an epic battle with a groundhog, get ready for some lemon-scented fun. Let’s see what’s under the bed…
Tina and Tammy, the TipTop Twins, are a comedy duo made up of Mendy St. Ours & Denise Stewart. If you are music festival organizers, rock musicians, or a nonprofit organization looking for an original comedic voice in event hosting, they might be the sisters for you. Previous events include emceeing Shagwüf’s Sweet Freakshow and the Summer of Love Music Festival at IX Arts Park, running wild through more than one CLAW (Charlottesville Ladies’ Arm Wrestling) event, bringing in the bids at Live Arts Gala auctions, escaping a Tijuana jail to appear at Live Arts Late Night, and hosting and coasting through an encore of Barhopper’s with Offstage Theatre. They also like appearing at dog weddins and seances where Merle Haggard might show up!
Dirty Barbie is code, one that speaks to the secret lives of girls, the way we play, and the unsupervised side of childhood. Growing up in a small Southern town certainly has its artistic benefits -- it has defined the extremes of my comedy, from the subtle to the grotesque, and has provided me an anchor for the core of my identity. I have been working on my oral history for years. For this, I wanted to shape my stories into a one-hour wild ride.
Swamphatched Butterfly Productions worked with the UVA Health System, specifically the Committee on Responding to Discriminatory Behavior, and Paladin Media Group to create two sets of training videos to be used system-wide and for other teaching hospitals. These videos, inspired by collected true stories from staff, medical students, and teaching faculty, are used within a complete training framework, and were written and directed by Denise Stewart. Creators of the project presented their work in April at the American Association of Medical Colleges Joint Spring Meeting in Chicago.
